There are around 600 medical schools in the country as of 2020 with more than 50000 medical students passing out every year. The Internship year is a very important part of a medical student’s life before becoming a fully discovered medical professional. After studying for 4.5 years it is finally the time to put oneself to work. Internships give us the opportunity to learn so much more and enable a platform to put our studies into work. Being in a new place where you won’t have your friends or teachers anymore but patients and hospital staff is a huge shift. Here are some tips that one should follow to have a successful and calm internship.

Be Systematic

Being an intern, you would have a lot on your mind and since it is new, it is difficult to focus on many things at a time. For this, try to be systematic. Make a to-do list and try keeping a track of most of your work one by one. When in doubt or need assistance always be confident enough to ask for help from your seniors and observe how they have tabs on their devices to keep them systematic.

Know the basics

As an intern, if you do not know about diseases that are not common it is okay and is often unlooked at but it is important to learn the basics well that is knowing the Symptoms and practices of common diseases like nausea, how to control pain, and more. One of the ways to remember these practices is to refer to intern guides on the internet which gives you a lot of information.

Be Observant

It is important, as an intern, to listen and observe all the senior workers and doctors carefully. Being an intern gives you the leverage as you don’t have to know everything about a particular topic since you’re there to learn. In an internship, one should always be open to learning. The best and ideal way is to listen more than speaking.

Study your patient

Reading through your patient’s files allows you to have a better knowledge about your patient and their symptoms, medication, reactions, allergies and much more. Patients expect that their care providers know their medical conditions thoroughly and offer the best possible treatments. Reading through your patient’s files not only aids you offer better help but also expands your ability to identify the weak points and your knowledge to expand on other cases.

Speak to the patient’s family

As an intern, it is highly possible that you may not know much about the patient and its treatment but most of the time the family just wants to have health updates. It is important to be good and responsive to the patient’s family and build trust. Most of the time the family responds by saying thank you which makes one feel good and satisfied.

Calm yourself down

As an intern, the people around you don’t expect you to know a lot of things. So putting a lot of pressure on yourself from the initial stage of your internship will make you less confident even if it is your forte which will result in a bad impression. Remember to keep yourself calm and try to keep a smiling face on; have a good attitude and follow up on things well.

Be a team player

While being an Intern you are new to everything around you. During this time, it is important to be a team player. Being with your team will not only help you improve your patient’s health but will also build the trust and bond that is needed for a team to be efficient enough. Nothing would work properly in the hospital if your team consisting of fellow interns, senior residents, phlebotomists, medical assistants, nurses, hospital transporters etc does not work in sync, patience and respect for one another.

The 5.5 years of your life of being a student physician are very crucial and of utmost importance of which that one whole year where you have different residential rotations and meet a lot of different people helps you gain experience and knowledge which is very essential for your development.

Though being an intern, you would have limited time and much more work to do, but practising these tips will help you widen your skills and contribute to you in the future.

On My Own Technology (OMOTEC), a dynamic innovation and research centre that brings STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) learning to children, has organised a hands-on workshop on Robotics for students between March 30, 2021 and April 8, 2021.

The 10-day robotics summer workshop, which will be conducted in centre as well as online, is designed in such a way that it combines fun with the opportunity for kids and teens to build and engineer robots while learning artificial intelligence, visual coding, and machine learning.

This workshop will also have students solve competitive challenges where kids and teens can task their robots with specific actions.

Technology is constantly changing the way we do things today. Artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics are playing a crucial role in this. Most of the schools worldwide have already included robotics in their curriculum. This summer workshop is an attempt to give an opportunity to students to get hands-on experience in robotics in a fun-learning way,” OMOTEC Founder, Shekhar Jain said.

These Robotics workshops will allow students to create an app-enabled as well as controlled robots. It will also enable them to create autonomous robots that act on their own.

There are innumerable opportunities in Robotics workshop with OMOTEC where students explore the opportunity to build and code online with live instructors, create and automate circuits with Arduino, build your own bots, and see how various mechanical and electronic construction create movement with loads of fun learning,” Jain added.

During the workshops, students will also get to learn how to create Robots that pick up objects and understand how Robots conduct specific tasks of navigating a maze, navigating an obstacle course or sorting through colour coded lines.

Why Robotics?

Everything from cars and smartphones to thermostats and gaming consoles are tied to robotics and mechanical engineering. Whether kids dream of becoming a Hardware Designer at Apple or an Aerospace Technician at NASA, robotics camp teaches the skills required to make it a reality.

Autonomous robots, self-driving cars and delivery bots are terms used to describe robots that use sensors to enable actions with little or no human interaction. Robotics offers a number of benefits like problem solving and computational thinking skills

Moreover, the most important benefit of Robotics is it’s a gateway to coding and STEM subjects where students learn applied knowledge of Science and Math.

Relevance of Robotics Summer Workshop

Typically, summer vacation is the time when children look forward to play, enjoy with their friends, cousins, going to places and making memories of fun and laughter. But due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, parents are already worried about allowing their kids to go out. Also, due to the restrictions imposed, students have been practically locked in their homes since last one year with very limited opportunities to learn new things that will not only enhance their capabilities but also make them future ready in AI. The idea behind organising this camp during summer was that since this period is of transition for kids from lower grade to higher grade and parents are also eager to expose their children to new skills which will complement their overall growth in the next academic year, even students will get a hands-on experience in a difficult subject like robotics in a fun learning environment.

What Will Students Learn?

  • Building new interests and independent thinking.
  • Making, experimenting and creating robots
  • Students can build and code online with instructors
  • Executing real practical projects at home with live instructions.
  • Create and automate circuits with Arduino

The fees for the 10 day workshop would be Rs.8999 inclusive of Robotic Kit delivered at your doorstep.

In conversation with Varun Kohli, Co-Founder, Coding Blocks

  1. What is your perspective of coding and the importance of teaching programming?

Coding is the most desired skill of the 21st century. Considered as one of the highest paying and stable careers, traditionally Coding was opted by many students at College level. There exists a general perception that coding is the forte of the ‘Gifted learners’ and cannot be taken up by average students.

Before anything else, we need to address what is Coding and how does one start learning it. Well, simply put, Coding is a way to make software and hardware act upon your instructions. There is a particular way to do this and learning that way is learning to code. It is naturally logical in nature, and hence learning to code teaches good logical ability to learners. In addition, it teaches how to solve a problem by breaking its complexity to a simpler structure and making deductions from it.

  1. What are the advantages of programming?

Coding is a boon for students as it will help them enhance logical thinking and problem solving from an earlier stage. Coding and programming are game changers in the education system. We will see a new generation that will be using analytical thinking to solve problems. In India, it is the perfect time to teach the children about new age learning which will help them tremendously both in the jobs sector as well as in Entrepreneurship.

  1. What is the current status of programming in India?

Programming in India is typically opted by students at the higher education level- colleges, universities and the like. Even here, the syllabus of universities or colleges are in urgent need of an overhaul as the current syllabi presents a big challenge to students who need extra hand holding to make sure they are able to clear the placement drives of good tech companies. The key to success is to be aligned with the industry needs at all times. Students need to brace themselves with latest tech stacks and keep practicing Coding problems on a regular basis. Participation in community and Open Source are also good means to stay aligned.

  1. What can be done to make the situation better? How will it help the IT industry?

Students need to understand that what they learn in college might not be enough and they need to keep themselves aligned with the needs of the IT industry. Practice is the key to success and learning the latest stacks is always beneficial.

The Covid pandemic has evolved the IT industry and it is now functioning well in the Remote working scenario. Well trained, industry aligned students will help the IT industry align easily to Remote protocol and will help students in bagging better opportunities and packages.

  1. Tell us more about Coding Blocks Junior- a new initiative offering free courses in coding?

Coding Blocks Junior is one of the first initiatives in India to provide free Coding courses in Visual programming, Python, Web development and Robotics to school students across India and abroad.

Coding Blocks Junior has superb mentors, well researched content and all programs on Coding Blocks Junior are Certificate programs. There is no fee for doing the course from Coding Blocks Junior.

Coding Blocks Junior is the long awaited dream of our founder, Manmohan Gupta, an IIT Delhi alumni who believes that Coding should be imparted to all students at the school level.

In conversation with Gaurav Bhagat, Founder, Gaurav Bhagat Academy.

What are views on business development and sales coaching market in India?

The sales training market in India has been continuously evolving over the last few years.  Large corporations have always had access to programs from global leaders like Dale Carnegie, Mercuri Goldman and Rain and the smaller firms have relied a lot on in-house talent as well. There are a lot of smaller coaching firms and stand-alone coaches who have also come up over the years and played their respective roles in training and coaching as well. At the Gaurav Bhagat Academy we realised there is a lot of scope of improvement in both the content and the delivery of sales training in particular compared to what is being done globally. Keeping this in mind we tied up with Grant Cardone Enterprises in Miami, Florida, USA.  Grant Cardone has been recognised by Forbes magazine as the world’s best sales trainer and his content has led to the acclaimed 10X movement.  At the GBA, we are curating and delivering this content for businesses in India and helping them take their sales knowledge and systems to the next level.

What is the requirement of Sales Training post Covid?

The Covid-19 pandemic may have started as a health emergency, but it has now bared its face as an economic disaster. During the lockdown period, many young businesses perished and many had to resort to inducing salary cuts. Over 12 crore Indians lost their jobs, and 25% of start-ups are in serious trouble. Consumer behaviour has changed drastically during the pandemic phase and since most businesses do not have a flexible sales strategy, they are witnessing a consistent loss of demand for their products and services. Many have even reported zero sales during Q1 of 2020. At such a time, the importance of sales training cannot be overemphasized. Once the pandemic subsides, a new normal will ensue, and to make the most of the opportunities that present themselves, businesses will need sales training.

Please express your views on employee welfare and work from home.

Like I already mentioned, working professionals were put through the gauntlet during the lockdown period and since many organizations still haven’t recovered from the initial shock, their employees are still facing salary cuts. This is why organizations need to ensure that their employee morale stays high. It can be achieved simply by communicating and being transparent. If the executives are planning to bring in new policies, they should get the employees involved in the decision-making process to make sure they’re not betrayed. They should also focus on arranging training and workshops for their employees to help them acquire new skills that will be needed in the new normal. This will help the employees feel confident and motivate them to be more productive.

Work from home used to be something that was frowned upon, however, during this crisis, this model has emerged as a lifesaver. Some organizations have found it to be so efficient that they’ve permanently switched to it. It is now evident that work from home is here to stay long after the pandemic subsides and it will become an integral part of our lives.

How important is financial independence for businesses?

At the GBA we have a very strong belief that freedom from bad balance sheets is corporate India’s birth right and by delivering the best possible sales training in the country we will achieve it for all our clients.   We have already seen that almost 90% of all participants who have gone through the academy in the past 2 years and achieving break through results and heading to a path of dominating their markets. Sales is the one thing that will be responsible for the bounce back from the COVID-19 recession and we are at the fore front of delivering the best in sales training backed by 35 years of legacy content and signature systems from Grant Cardone.

What is the future of economy post-COVID -19?

After having contracted by 24% during the April-June quarter, the economy is now gradually beginning to get back on track. However, given how disastrous the pandemic has been, the road to recovery will not be easy. The IMF has predicted that only by the end of 2022 will India’s economy be at pre-Covid levels. In the meantime, businesses need to realize that while the market is tough, there still are opportunities. The demand for some of the products remains low, but there has been a sharp increase in the demand for other products, such as FMCG goods, hand sanitizers, probiotics, immunity boosters, and other types of health supplements.

By being adaptive, innovative, and accepting of change, the businesses can explore new avenues when they open up. This will fast track economic revival and help the businesses to survive during these turbulent times.

Your views on usage of technology in New Normal?

The Covid-19 pandemic has catalysed the adoption of technology. We were forced to switch to the virtual space overnight to safely continue education, business, medical consultations, and whatnot. Now that people have had a taste of what technology can do for them, they have become more reliant on it. Shopping from the comfort of your home is much appealing than going to the market – where you may potentially contract the dreaded Coronavirus. Technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Internet of Things, Blockchain, etc. will find their way into every business domain and make business more efficient and flexible. Entrepreneurs who manage to spot these changes early will be able to leverage these technologies to strengthen their organizations and will gain a definitive edge over their competition.

What are the future Plans of GBA?

At the Gaurav Bhagat Academy we have a very ambitious plan of assisting 100,000 businesses add an average of 100 jobs each and help 900,000 working professionals live the 10X life, which is a life without limitations. In order to achieve this, we are adopting a lot of cutting-edge technology for content delivery, we are also scaling up the number of coaches and trainers that we have at the academy. We have a very aggressive marketing and expansion strategy and have a tie up with several industry bodies and associations.  All in all, it’s a combination of technology, best in industry content and aggressive marketing that will get us to achieve this number.

Economies across the world are set to go through an AI transformation that will come to dominate many industries. Contrary to perception that the transformation will put many of us out of jobs, this will create a lot of jobs. But to ensure that we do not become redundant in doing those jobs, we need to ensure we reskill the current talent pool.

Education and learning ecosystems need to play a big role in filling the gap. We must debunk the notion that technological innovation is a challenge to people’s jobs. According to Gartner, AI will automate 1.8 million jobs and create 2.3 million — a net increase of 500,000. A World Economic Forum report estimates AI could create 58 million net new jobs by 2022.

If students aren’t upskilled in AI, some may find their skills obsolete for the next century. As AI expands, so will related job positions. Future jobs in AI have the potential to uplift entire communities including underdeveloped and underserved communities.

Emergence of Cloud and Data Science

As Cloud and data science matures and continue to make a significant impact on society, we would see required introductory courses in these subjects enter standard curriculum. People talk about the potential impact of AI, but less so about how it works. By educating students and existing workforce on artificial intelligence, we will demystify technology and drive less fearful, more productive dialogue on its impact.

With global lockdowns, many schools and universities transitioned to online course delivery and operations almost immediately. But this need of transition to online learning due to Covid-19 has exposed significant gaps in education supply chain. The answer to that too lies with AI. While there have been many technological advancements in the past decade, the education industry has been slower to adapt. With the right level of support from tech giants, government and willingness of education industry to invest can allow the quick adoption of cloud to conduct and process tuitions, evaluations and entrance examinations. Government and social sector interventions can help ensure the percolation of AI is egalitarian.

Even the niche yet growing edutech sector saw a surge in scale and responded with broader services and offerings. The market for AI tutoring has been projected to reach nearly $120 billion by 2021.

AI is changing how we learn and comprehend. Traditionally we have seen numerous barriers prevent education from reaching its full potential: money, space, availability, affordability and accessibility, among others.

AI offers a promising solution by solving most of these issues as it offers personalised education on an unmatched scale. For now it’s only available to a fortunate few. In that sense it is widening the learning gap which needs to be addressed through social interventions.

How can AI help us?

With AI powered Education Apps and smart content ranging from mathematics, arts, science to writing, AI systems can address specific learning needs of students and provide individualised and efficient feedback in addition to adaptive behavioural analytics with positive and data-driven learning experience.

Stanford’s 100 Year Study on Artificial Intelligence says: “This development will facilitate more customisable approaches to learning, in which students can learn at their own pace using educational techniques that work best for them.”

If we can combine AI with virtual reality (VR), it can make the classroom feel out of this world. Platforms like ClassVR offer technology allowing students to interact, gesture control etc. This helps in raising engagement and knowledge retention for students of all ages.

AI and Machine Leaning (ML) tools combined with Digital Assistants can help establish global classrooms to overcome the barrier of language used for education delivery or for that matter for cater to those with visual or hearing impairments. Today, Presentation Translator (or other tools like Google Translator) provides a free plug-in for PowerPoint that creates subtitles in real time for what the teacher is saying.

This also opens up possibilities of converting niche courses to On-demand for students who might not be able to attend school due to illness or who require learning at a different level or on a particular subject that isn’t available in their own school or geography.

AI can drive personalization, efficiency for knowledge dispensation, and streamline associated admin tasks to allow teachers the much-required time to provide understanding and tool for adapting lessons for unique human capabilities where machines would struggle.

It can also help teachers. Teachers spend hours grading. AI can automate the grading process allowing teachers to spend more time with their students and focus on actual learning and practical knowledge. According to a report by UNESCO, roughly 60,000 schools in China have implemented an essay-grading machine that matches humans 92% of the time.

Conclusion

But for all this to work we need to ensure AI is implemented ethically with unbiased algorithms. AI technology can’t ever replace an in-person instructor with a full spectrum of emotions. Not for young children at least. As the power of AI, VR, AR and Cloud is growing exponentially, it’s important to leverage it ethically for good, not just for efficiency and scale. It will be important for educators and policymakers to explore the intersection of education and artificial intelligence.

As AI educational solutions continue to mature, it can help fill needs gaps in learning and teaching and allow schools and teachers to stretch the boundaries of what was thought to be possible in education.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras, or IIT Madras, started its first-ever online internship drive. On the first day, 20 companies made 152 offers to undergraduate students. Top Indian and global companies, including Microsoft India, Google, Rubrik’s Software Development, and Jane Street’s Quantitative Researcher interviewed students over video conferencing platforms and offered internships for the Summer of 2021, an official statement said.

“I am happy to inform that the online internship interviews for Day one has been quite successful. IIT Madras Internship Office conducted three student surveys and two surveys with companies who frequently recruit our students for internships and placements before arriving at this date of August 30, for day one,” Prof. N.V. Ravi Kumar, Advisor (Internship), IIT Madras, said in a statement.

“We had requested companies to be flexible considering that several of our students were in remote and far-flung locations where Internet connectivity may not be as good as in urban locations. The collective efforts of internships student heads and their teams in collaboration with the companies who participated in this approach resulted in positive outcomes,” Prof Kumar added.

The IIT Madras placement team and the internship student team coordinated with students through various social media platforms to hold the online interviews.

As part of IIT Madras’ academic curriculum, internships are mandatory for BTech and MTech courses besides Dual Degree students.
