The TiE Nurture Accelerator had 63 mentees from four cities this year – 40 from Pune, 7 from Nagpur, 4 from Hubli and 4 from Surat. The program that began in September 2020, had a boot camp on March 12 and 13, 2021. This is a physical meeting that allows mentees to meet mentors, speakers and network with each other.

Day 1 had several gurus, namely, Devendra Deshmukh (founder e-Zest), Rakesh Doshi (investor and founder Trade Mentor & Techno Hub, Surat) Smita Yedekar (co-founder & CEO 1Mobility – acquired by Qualys Inc.) Vinay Nathan (founder Altizon) and Hemant Jalan (founder Indigo Paints), sharing their experiences and expertise on varied topics like

·               How do you define success?

·               How to make a compelling presentation?

·               How to draft a strategy for your business?

·               What do VCs look for in a business to invest? and

·               Ethics in business.

Most panelists had an interesting way of looking at success. Devendra felt that his readings on how the Tata group created wealth helped him define success. “I feel that success is about how many lives can we touch with our work. It is about empowering people and our employees and not just about the bottom line.”

Rakesh felt that “passion makes a product, but what makes a business successful? Success is about combining two disciplines to solve a problem like, say, engineering and medical science to develop Robotic surgery.”

Vinay whose company is among the top ten industrial IOT companies globally said, “in the early days simply surviving is a goal.” For Smita “success is a moving target and one should never be happy with what you’ve achieved, but be hungry for more.”

Hemant whose company recently went public and was oversubscribed 117 times, shared an interesting insight. “All our lives we have someone else define success for you. In school if you are in the top five you are considered a big success. This goes on even in college and at your workplace with you being considered successful if you have achieved your KRAs. But is it? I think everyone, not just entrepreneurs, should take some time out and seriously think this through. How would you define success? If it means having 2 BMWs, a huge bungalow or becoming good at whatever you want to do, then write it down. You do not need to share it with anyone. Lock it away. After five years revisit your definition of success and see what you have achieved. Now think again what is it you want to achieve. If after 10 years you’ve crossed all the goals you set for yourself or even 80-90% of it, then you should consider yourself successful. If your business has been on track for 10 years then you can safely assume that it will survive the long term.”

Can there be talk about success without discussing failure. Ramesh Mirakhur who moderated this discussion asked everyone what lesson they learnt from their failures. Said Devendra “When our company that was doing phenomenally well lost our top three clients who accounted for 80% of our revenues, I realized the importance of building a strong foundation and a process driven approach.”

For Rakesh, it was the lost opportunity of mutual fund business. “Then I realized that the cost of good legal advice is never too high.”

Hemant who went bankrupt in ’93 said, “At that time I lost everything, my house, car, we were totally bankrupt. But it made me realize that as an entrepreneur I have to take risks. And before taking any action it’s a good idea to step back and take a look at your decision. What is the worst that could happen if it fails? If it is a decision where you stand to lose everything that you have built then it’s best if you do not take that risk.”

Prasad Bhide, founder, Aaji Cares a mentee summed it up “this session gave us very interesting insights into the idea of success.”

All in all, it was truly an insightful and successful program.

On My Own Technology (OMOTEC), a dynamic innovation and research centre that brings STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) learning to children, has organised a hands-on workshop on Robotics for students between March 30, 2021 and April 8, 2021.

The 10-day robotics summer workshop, which will be conducted in centre as well as online, is designed in such a way that it combines fun with the opportunity for kids and teens to build and engineer robots while learning artificial intelligence, visual coding, and machine learning.

This workshop will also have students solve competitive challenges where kids and teens can task their robots with specific actions.

Technology is constantly changing the way we do things today. Artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics are playing a crucial role in this. Most of the schools worldwide have already included robotics in their curriculum. This summer workshop is an attempt to give an opportunity to students to get hands-on experience in robotics in a fun-learning way,” OMOTEC Founder, Shekhar Jain said.

These Robotics workshops will allow students to create an app-enabled as well as controlled robots. It will also enable them to create autonomous robots that act on their own.

There are innumerable opportunities in Robotics workshop with OMOTEC where students explore the opportunity to build and code online with live instructors, create and automate circuits with Arduino, build your own bots, and see how various mechanical and electronic construction create movement with loads of fun learning,” Jain added.

During the workshops, students will also get to learn how to create Robots that pick up objects and understand how Robots conduct specific tasks of navigating a maze, navigating an obstacle course or sorting through colour coded lines.

Why Robotics?

Everything from cars and smartphones to thermostats and gaming consoles are tied to robotics and mechanical engineering. Whether kids dream of becoming a Hardware Designer at Apple or an Aerospace Technician at NASA, robotics camp teaches the skills required to make it a reality.

Autonomous robots, self-driving cars and delivery bots are terms used to describe robots that use sensors to enable actions with little or no human interaction. Robotics offers a number of benefits like problem solving and computational thinking skills

Moreover, the most important benefit of Robotics is it’s a gateway to coding and STEM subjects where students learn applied knowledge of Science and Math.

Relevance of Robotics Summer Workshop

Typically, summer vacation is the time when children look forward to play, enjoy with their friends, cousins, going to places and making memories of fun and laughter. But due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, parents are already worried about allowing their kids to go out. Also, due to the restrictions imposed, students have been practically locked in their homes since last one year with very limited opportunities to learn new things that will not only enhance their capabilities but also make them future ready in AI. The idea behind organising this camp during summer was that since this period is of transition for kids from lower grade to higher grade and parents are also eager to expose their children to new skills which will complement their overall growth in the next academic year, even students will get a hands-on experience in a difficult subject like robotics in a fun learning environment.

What Will Students Learn?

  • Building new interests and independent thinking.
  • Making, experimenting and creating robots
  • Students can build and code online with instructors
  • Executing real practical projects at home with live instructions.
  • Create and automate circuits with Arduino

The fees for the 10 day workshop would be Rs.8999 inclusive of Robotic Kit delivered at your doorstep.
