St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine hosted a three-day familiarization program for over 20 international education agents and school advisors from around the globe. The second edition of the program this year allowed attendees to explore the University’s medical curriculum and tour SGU’s True Blue campus in Grenada, in the Caribbean.

Delegates received a comprehensive overview of SGU’s MD program, pathways, and robust student support services led by SGU faculty and senior leaders. They enjoyed a campus tour, exploring the advanced medical school facilities, with exclusive access to modern learning environments such as a clinical exam room, sonogram room, and specialist simulation and anatomy laboratories. Attendees also visited the various on-campus amenities including the accommodation options, the Fitness and Wellness Center, and the Health Services Clinic. An added highlight was the interactive Q&A session with current students, which provided genuine insights into everyday life as a medical student at SGU.

Corrine Vish, Director of International Admissions at SGU, commented on the importance of the familiarization program, saying, “The program is designed to immerse counselors and agents in SGU’s vibrant community and culture. These tours play a key role in offering education professionals a glimpse into our multifaceted approach to education and our dedication to nurturing our students in every facet of their academic journey and personal development.”

Among the many benefits, attendees witnessed firsthand the value that SGU places on quality international medical education and the impact SGU has in equipping doctors of the future.

Varun Iyer from Go to University, India, described his experience, “Visiting St. George’s University True Blue campus in Grenada gave me firsthand insight into the life of a medical student and their academic journey, something I’ve been eager to understand as I’ve recruited and counseled students for SGU over the last few years.

“This experience was eye-opening, and I enjoyed meeting the faculty and touring the campus. I was particularly impressed by the large support team, which includes over a hundred staff members dedicated to student success. The insights and experience I’ve gained here will be invaluable in guiding my future students.”

Mehar Taban from SIUK, India, added, “Visiting St. George’s University and experiencing the True Blue campus was beyond my expectations. Everything about SGU has impressed me, from its safety and location to its facilities and the opportunities it provides for progression into the medical profession in the US or UK.

“Having worked with SGU for over ten years and sent many students there, I’ve always received positive feedback. Seeing the campus in person has further reinforced my confidence in recommending it to anyone aspiring to study medicine.”

Following this year’s success, another edition of the familiarization program will commence in the new year in January as SGU recognizes the benefits and value of international education agents and school advisors.

It has provided me with opportunities to broaden my perspectives, learn from different cultures, and form lasting relationships with students from all over the world.”

Both SGU and the Ramaiah Group of Institutions have medical schools established over 40 years ago with a long history of educating medical students. With applications still open, it is not too late for students to start their journey of becoming a doctor in the US or the UK.

As the medical school graduating the largest number of students per year, SGU places the largest number of graduates into residency programs each year, based on internal SGU graduate/expected graduate and residency placement data as of June 2023

St. George’s University (SGU), Grenada is pleased to announce that applications are open for its September 2023 intake, starting in India. The pathway provides an opportunity for students to benefit from two medical institutions while learning from each other and the community, along with experiencing a diverse range of clinical rotations in the US or UK.

For students with international medical aspirations, this pathway could be the first step towards realising their dreams. This pathway does not require Indian students to sit for the NEET or the MCAT to apply. Interested applicants can find more details and submit their application at www.sgu.edu/ramaiah.

“Our association with SGU offers students the opportunity to experience medical education on an international level. We look forward to giving students the exposure they need to succeed in their careers as medical professionals anywhere in the world. Moreover, students get to begin their medical education in Bengaluru, in a comfortable setting, and forge enduring bonds with their peers, before moving for the MD4 program,” says Dr. Shalini Sivanajiah, Associate Dean at Ramaiah International Medical School, Bengaluru.

“The 5-Year Medical Degree Pathway offered by SGU in association with Ramaiah is a great opportunity that serves as an ideal point of entry into the medical space,” says Adhrit Ranjan, a student of the pathway (class of 2027). “With this pathway, I can complete my preclinical at Ramaiah in Bengaluru, before moving on to either Grenada or the UK for the Basic Sciences courses, in my subsequent years. The clinical rotations can be completed either in the UK or the US, which gives me hands-on medical practice before entering the medical field as a professional. As a preclinical student, I feel this pathway is helping me build a strong foundation that will help me practise medicine with the exposure and confidence I will need to excel at our job.”

The SGU India pathway offers an environment that brings practice-based learning to the fore and allows students to experience multiple global healthcare systems before starting their careers as professional medical practitioners.

Bengaluru, 22 November, 2022 – St. George’s University (SGU), Grenada, in the Caribbean, announced that it is accepting applications for its unique January 2023 intake from prospective medical students in India.  This means that students who have missed accepting a place in medical school this year, do not need to wait for an entire year to start classes.

Interested students can visit the SGU Website for more details.

The institution currently runs three intakes per year – in January, April, and August – offering students of each cohort various advantages. There’s also a September option for students looking to start their journey on SGU Ramaiah’s 5-Year Medical Degree pathway or SGU’s UK pathway, in partnership with Northumbria University. Beginning medical school in the first month of the year might seem unorthodox, but there are some advantages for students to consider.

For example, students can enjoy a more intimate learning environment due to a favorable student-to-faculty ratio. Because the winter class is traditionally smaller than the fall cohort, new students will benefit from smaller lectures as they begin their medical school journeys.

Matching into a medical residency is a crucial part of becoming a doctor in the US, and by starting medical school in January, students would have the opportunity to begin that process earlier than expected.

In addition, key examinations take place in spring, near the end of their second year of medical school, and these tests have a tendency of sneaking up on students, so preparing early is essential.

“St. George’s University School of Medicine is one of the unique international institutions that provide multiple intakes, so students can plan for their education in a flexible manner. Our January intake allows SGU to cater to the diverse needs of prospective medical students, and it’s clear that unique offerings like this yield several rewards for the medical students who enroll,” said David Anthonisz, Director, International Student Recruitment at St. George’s University.

A higher education in medicine is bound to have a few surprises here and there, regardless of the time one has spent studying and preparing to be a medical student. ADoctor of Medicine (MD) program is very different from any other professional degree.

To give you a better idea of what to anticipate when you start medical school, a few graduates from St. George’s University, Grenada, West Indies, in the Caribbean, share what they wish they’d known before they started.

1. Give importance to time and schedule management

Many students can get away with cramming for large exams or skimming through weekly reading assignments during school or college. Such short cuts will not work as a medical student. As an aspiring healthcare professional, you must acquire a large quantity of information in a short period of time, so good study habits and task prioritisation are crucial.

2. Do not compare your study methods with your peers

It is not uncommon to feel slightly lost at the start of medical school. As a result, it can be natural to look around and compare yourself to your peers, but this impulse can be counterproductive to your medical school performance.

It’s critical to remember that your classmates aren’t your competitors, and what works for one student might not work for another. The goal is to find which learning tactics work best for you.

3. Have a wider perspective

While medicine is a scientific discipline, it’s also quite nuanced.

As a practitioner, you must learn to look at the big picture to accurately identify medical concerns and prescribe the right course of treatment. The sooner you accept that concept, the better off you will be in medical school and beyond.

4. Take time out for self-care

It is imperative for medical students to take some personal time out during a day of studying. Building up this habit right from the start will ensure that students, and eventually professionals, do not face burnout, even as a professional medical practitioner.

5. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness

Medicine is one of the most demanding educational programmes offered. Many students find themselves challenged academically like never before. During such situations, it is the advice of successful doctors to seek help. Medical schools fully expect students to seek advice, and most of them have support groups and centres that will assist the students during their difficult times. For example, the Department of Educational Services at St. George’s University is used by nearly 100 percent of students to obtain help with a variety of things such as,note-taking, time management, exam preparation and with other academic and non-academic support.

6.  Not all medical schools will yield the same outcomes

One of the first steps in the medical school admission process is evaluating the different potential medical schools. During this process, it is important to keep in mind that the way schools train their students will be different from one another. Syllabus, faculty, extracurriculars, and teaching methods are just some of the factors that one can see differences in.

This is where contact with alumni comes in handy. Alumni groups and associations will be able to give a detailed overview of experiences specific to that school. This is a sure-fire way of selecting a school that suits you best.

St. George’s University, In Association with Ramaiah Group of Institutions To Host “Mini-Med Course 2022” for Medical Aspirants

St. George’s University (SGU), in association with Ramaiah Group of Institutions, will hold its annual “Mini-Med” Course on the campus of Ramaiah International Medical School in Bangalore. The sessions will be held on the 10th and 11th June for students from classes 11 and 12.

Since 2019, SGU and Ramaiah’s “Mini-Med” Course has allowed students to get a glimpse into medical education and experience the broad spectrum of topics they would expect to encounter at medical school. In 2022, students on the two-day course will take taster classes in medical ethics, dissection and basic surgical skills, and anatomical terminology. They will also be introduced to fascinating topics such as emergency medicine and basic life support. The primary objective of the “Mini-Med” Course is to give students an in-depth perspective about what to expect while they are being trained to be a doctor, and to envision themselves embarking on a global career in medicine.

Comprising a series of moderated and interactive sessions, the two-day course will cover a diverse range of topics and provide students with an opportunity to understand medicine as a career path. Students will engage with multiple on-ground academic staff to gain practical experience through experiential training, and lab work in small group sessions. The St. George’s University faculty will also enable students to become familiar with worldwide healthcare systems and global healthcare challenges.

“Today’s medical aspirants have access to a wealth of information before making any decisions regarding their future education. SGU and Ramaiah’s “Mini-Med” Course goes further than research; allowing students to engage with experienced medical experts and provide motivation to follow their dream of becoming a doctor.” adds Dr. Sudha Suresh, Associate Dean, Ramaiah International Medical School.

In addition to gaining insights into the life of a medical student, the sessions aim to help students select and obtain information about a career in medicine. Students will get certificates upon successful completion of the course and will also have the opportunity to interact and network with senior medical academic professionals.
