Two talented students from NMIMS University, Ms. Amruta Mali and Ms. Poonam Patil, pursuing their Final Year B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture at the School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Shirpur, have emerged as shining stars at the SmartIdeathon Competition, held at GITAM University Hyderabad. This prestigious event was organized in collaboration with Startup India, IIC, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, and Northeastern University, Boston, USA, drawing participants from universities and institutes across the country.

Amruta and Poonam, the founders of Agro-India, an initiative under SVKM’s NMIMS – School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Shirpur, showcased their praiseworthy innovation during the competition. They presented a board game which has evolved into a comprehensive simulation of the agricultural ecosystem. This game captures the intricacies of crop management, resource allocation, and market dynamics in an appealing and educational manner.

The SmartIdeathon Competition, a ‘Student pitching competition,’ saw the duo advance to the final rounds, securing a coveted position among the Top 8 Finalists from participants across the nation.

The competition drew participants from diverse fields of study and was a vindication of the power of ideas and their potential to bring about big change in the industries. The students’ passion for agriculture and strategic thinking resulted in a concept that combined these two elements into an agriculture-based board game. The process involved refining the game mechanics, designing the board, and devising challenges that tested their innovation and creativity.

For the two students, reaching the top 8 is not only a personal victory, but also a validation of the numerous hours they spent brainstorming, designing, and refining the game. It speaks volumes about their capability for interdisciplinary thinking and the ability to bridge gaps between traditional industries and modern innovation.

Dr. Suseelendra Desai, Dean, School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, expressed his pride for the students’ achievement and said, “Amruta and Poonam’s outstanding achievement at the SmartIdeathon Competition highlights NMIMS University’s firm belief in promoting innovation and nurturing their creativity. I am certain that this is only the beginning of their journey and they will go on to win many more accolades.”

FamilyOfficeof Aloke and Suchitra Lohia has invested in Global Study Abroad Platform, Leverage, which includes LeverageEdu, Fly.finance& Fly Homes. The Lohia family are the largest shareholders in Indorama Ventures PCL, one of Thailand’s largest publicly listed companies. This investment underscores Leverage Edu’s commitment to expand to the Southeast Asia market and double down on its commitment to enable students from emerging economies to access the best quality education across the world.

“We are thrilled to be partners on this journey with Leverage Edu, a pioneer in Student Mobility. The family believes in supporting ventures that create positive societal impacts. Leverage Edu’s innovative approach resonates deeply with our values, and we are excited to contribute to their mission,” said Suchitra Lohia, Executive Director of Indorama Ventures, who spearheads the Family Office operations based out of Bangkok.

More than 40,000 students went abroad from Thailand to study overseas last year, showing a ~30% CAGR in outbound international student numbers. Moreover, none of the universities in Thailand are globally ranked which makes a foreign education even more lucrative for its ambitious population. Leverage Edu’s mission to enable the next 100,000 Thai students to study abroad will be fueled by this partnership.

Akshay Chaturvedi, Founder & CEO, Leverage Edu, Fly.finance and Fly Homes said, “Problems like lack of sufficient English language training will be our priority to solve in Thailand as we enter one of Southeast Asia’s most promising markets. We are looking to set up an office in Bangkok, where the family has a deep understanding of Thai ecosystem, can support us. Subject matter experts and students raised concerns about the answer key released by the National Test Agency (NTA) for the Undergraduate Common University Entrance Test (CUET – UG) on June 29, 2023. In response, a new answer key was issued, but students are still unable to access it.

Candidates had the opportunity to challenge the answer key until July 1 by paying Rs 200 per question. Many students and teachers assert that there are incorrect answers in the key.

Vishu, a student from Charkhi Dadri in Haryana, took the Political Science CUET and found seven incorrect answers in Political Science and two in English. This compelled her to pay Rs 1800 to the testing agency. Vishu expressed frustration, stating that her score would be negatively affected if the NTA considers the flawed answer key, jeopardizing her chances of securing a seat at Delhi University.

Samrendra Kumar, an assistant professor at DU, pointed out the occurrence of careless mistakes in the answer key. He gave an example of a question that asked for the opposite gender of ‘kavi’ (poet) in Hindi, with the answer provided in the key being an elephant. Kumar expressed concern that such errors force students to pay substantial amounts to the NTA.

There are also incorrect answers regarding questions about the European Union and factual errors like stating Venus as the nearest planet to Earth and wrongly attributing Bhagat Singh as the founder of the Indian National Army in the answer key.

Students took to social media to express their grievances. Amit Kumar highlighted the unfairness of being charged for challenging incorrect answers, while UGC chairman Jagdish Kumar dismissed the mistakes as typographical errors.

Ankit Kumar, another student, shared his experience of not being able to view the new answer key despite its upload. Ankit expressed concern about the financial burden on his middle-class family, having already paid Rs 1400 for the CUET form fees and an additional Rs 2400 for NTA’s mistake.

Students nationwide are anxious about the impact of these errors on their scores. They are now eagerly awaiting the release of the second answer key.

Samrendra Kumar emphasized the need for careful planning and a blueprint to minimize mistakes in large-scale exams like CUET.

CUET-UG is the country’s second-largest entrance exam in terms of the number of applicants, with 12.5 lakh students registering for the first edition.

The Centre has submitted before Supreme Court that in consultation with National Medical Commission (NMC) it has taken pro-active measures to assist the students who had to return from Ukraine due to the ongoing crisis. However, the centre also stated that accommodating these students in Indian colleges will hamper the standards of Indian medical education.

“It is humbly submitted that in so far as such students are concerned, there are no such provisions either under the Indian Medical Council Act 1956 or the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 as well as the regulations to accommodate or transfer medical students from any foreign medical institutes/colleges to Indian medical colleges. Till now, no permission has been given by the NMC to trade or accommodate any foreign medical students in any Indian medical institute/university,” an affidavit by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

The affidavit added that the petitioners had gone to foreign countries for two reasons. Firstly, due to poor merit in the NEET Exam, secondly, affordability of medical education in such foreign countries.

“It is humbly submitted that in case these students with (a) poor merit are allowed admission in premier medical colleges in India by default, there may be several litigations from those desirous candidates who could not get seats in these colleges and have taken admission in either lesser-known colleges or have been deprived of a seat in medical colleges.

“Further, in case of affordability, if these candidates are allocated private medical colleges in India, they once again may not be able to afford the fees structure of the concerned institution,” it said.

Universities and Higher Education Institutions in India will now be allowed to add 25 percent supernumerary seats for foreign students in their undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes as per UGC chairman Jagadesh Kumar’s input to PTI.

There will be no entrance tests for these admissions; the decision was taken at a meeting of the University Grants Commission (UGC) held last week to discuss “internationalisation of UG and PG programmes in India.”

“Indian HEIs may admit international students based on the equivalence of entry qualification held by them. The equivalence is to be determined by UGC or any other body recognised by UGC for such purpose or the concerned regulatory bodies of the country. HEIs may adopt a transparent admission process for admitting the international students,” Kumar told PTI.

“HEIs may create up to 25 per cent supernumerary seats for international students, over and above of their total sanctioned enrolment for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes,” added him.
