Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan called for a technology-driven approach in line with the new National Education Policy (NEP 2020), so as to enhance access to quality education. He said that initiatives like digital universities will ensure a bright future for the student community.

The Union Education Minister stressed on the importance of adopting innovative and out-of-the-box methods for enhancing access to quality and affordable education. The Minister also added that making education accessible to all is the top priority of the government. In his address at India Today’s Education Conclave, Dharmendra Pradhan spoke about the necessity of bringing our vast population under the formal education and certified skills structure.

Going ahead the Minister spoke about the need for to integrating skill education into school and higher education to boost employability. “NEP sets the vision and path to cater to the requirements of every learner right from Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE),” he said.

NEP 2020 is designed with the greater goal of establishing India as a knowledge economy of the 21st century. It focuses on developing our youngsters as global citizens with innovative ideas and great skills.
“We must bring a paradigm shift in skilling and make it more aspirational to harness IR 4.0 as well as make our youth future-ready,” said the Minister.

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal has introduced in the closing session at the ‘Conclave on Transformational Reforms in Higher Education under National Education Policy’ and has announced UGC Guidelines for Higher Education Institutions to offer Apprenticeship/Internship embedded Degree Programme.

He stated employment generation together with better employability of the youth is the main concern of the Government.

Importance of the apprenticeship programme

Union Minister added that UGC Guidelines for Higher Education Institutions to offer Apprenticeship/Internship embedded Degree Programme will empower the Higher Education Institutions to carry on a exemplar change in general stream degree programmes and to insert employability assisting portions into the curriculum.

He also stated that the UGC Guidelines will deliver a choice for HEIs to drive in this Apprenticeship/Internship to all UG degrees as specified by UGC under section 22 (3) of the UGC Act, 1956.

Who attended the session?

Chaired by Prof. D.P. Singh on the theme of “Holistic, Multidisciplinary and Futuristic Education,” M.K. Sridhar, Member, Committee for draft NEP, Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia and Prof. E. Suresh Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, EFLU were the guest speakers on the session.

Followed by this was ‘Equitable use of Technology for better reach in Education’ and featured the panellists Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, Prof. Nageshwar Rao, Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU, Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT, Trichy. Prof. Anil Sahashrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE moderated the conference. The presenters explained on how India as a global leader in ICT needs to integrate tech to develop the reach of higher education.
