Ajit K Chaturvedi, Former Director of IIT Roorkee, and currently a faculty of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur, has shared his opinions on why some students gradually lose interest in Engineering after following that career path. After taking a significant interest in “engineering subjects”, mainly Physics, Chemistry, and Maths at school, many Engineering students tend to give up on the Engineering curriculum around the third or fourth semester of their course. There may be many reasons behind this; Chaturvedi helps us explore some of them.

The seed of interest towards Engineering is mainly sown in young minds when they realise their affinity towards science and technology. They are fascinated by the latest technological innovations that they have come across. They explore the three aforementioned subjects and eventually excel in one or more of them. However, the disconnect to the stream starts to seep in once they reach the third or fourth semester of their course. The curriculum that they study in college has barely any connection to the current technological advancements that drew them in in the first place. Slowly they start moving on from engineering when they also get a glimpse of the skimpy number of job opportunities in core Engineering.

Chaturvedi says that there are myths in our society about what constitutes science and what constitutes engineering. He believes it to be the responsibility of the people in STEM to raise awareness that engineering education is not divorced from, but built on the foundations of physics, chemistry and maths. The word “science” per see should not be conceived as simply physics, chemistry, maths and biology.

Usually, students grow disinterested towards engineering seeing the rising level of difficulty in the subjects they perceive as “science”. This disappointment often stems from the societal conditioning that engineering is something different from the “science” subjects they have studied.

Chaturvedi also perceives engineering students to be a byproduct of the engineering colleges: and like any product, they also have a shelf-life. We rarely see a product which retains its relevance in the market even after two to three years of its introduction in the market. This is exactly the challenge faced by the engineering curriculum.

Chaturvedi advises both internal and external efforts that can be made to retain the students’ interest in engineering. “The schools, societies and IITs can help prepare prospective engineering students with a better understanding of what they can expect from engineering education and how they can relate it to the technical world we see and experience”, he says. With the collective external addressing of this issue on the part of the IITs, the students and the curriculum both can be saved.

Internally, he says, the engineering curriculum should have a revision and necessary reform every two to three years to keep the curriculum from being redundant to the learner. Minor changes should keep being made on a continuous basis. Then, it might be possible to strike a balance between teaching the “Science of Engineering” and keeping the passion for engineering alive in students.

Owing to the rise in demand for Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) courses, the state of Tamil Nadu will offer 50% more seats of CSE and allied courses like BE or B.Tech. Out of the total 1,96,627 sanctioned seats for different engineering courses, CSE has the most number of seats allotted. In the past, around 27,000 seats were available for CSE courses but now the number of available seats is over 42,000. Correspondingly, the seats for B.Tech Information Technology (IT) increased from 9,114 to 15,718.

Furthermore, around 2,732 seats in B.Tech Artificial Intelligence (AI) were offered last year. However, this year, many colleges are offering various combinations of AI, Data Science (DI), and Machine Learning (ML) courses, and the number of seats available in these courses is over 14,000. Seats in BE Robotics and Automation have also increased and approximately 25 colleges are offering 1,020 seats for the program. One college is even planning on offering a course on BE CSE in Tamil instead of English.

Increase in seats in these courses have led to a decrease in the number of seats offered in courses like mechanical, civil, and other core engineering courses. Only around 26,600 seats are being offered for Mechanical Engineering (ME), and merely 15,000 seats are available for Civil Engineering (CE).

This increase in demand for CSE and allied courses is due to the boom that the industry is currently seeing. However, experts have opined that rather than jumping on the bandwagon, students should opt for courses that they actually like since there is no telling if the market will have the same demand for the field four years hence, which is when they will graduate. They also suggest that the students should look for seats in good colleges rather than chasing seats for a particular course.

~ Empowers learners with career support and post study work visa, after course completion~

upGrad Abroad, a ‘Study Abroad’ vertical of upGrad, Asia’s higher EdTech major, today announced a partnership with ESIGELEC, France to offer a Bridge Program for Masters in Engineering. The partnership will provide learners from B.Sc and BCA backgrounds with a regular science degree to pursue a Master’s degree in Engineering in France and expand their career opportunities.

ESIGELEC is a reputed French Graduate School with a strong focus on Information Technology and Electronics. The three-and-a-half-month online module, designed by ESIGELEC and powered by upGrad, covers topics such as Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Signal and Systems, Control Systems, Biographical Studies, and Communication Skills taught by renowned international faculty. Through this partnership learners can also avail post-study work visa support and career support, after course completion.

As organisations are embracing high-end technology, the demand for tech talent across the world is rising exponentially and the program will help them be future-ready. For those willing to pursue masters in Software Engineering and Digital Transformation one should be a BCA or B.Sc (IT/Computer Science) Graduate with 60% marks, and those willing to obtain Masters in Electronics and Embedded Systems, one must be a B.Sc (Electronics) Graduate with 60% marks. Additionally, a minimum of 50% marks in all subjects of the bridge program is mandatory to transfer to ESIGELEC, France.

Ankur Dhawan, President, upGrad Abroad, commented, “With transnational education as our aim, we are delighted to partner with ESIGELEC France, one of the oldest and well reputed French Graduate Schools to launch the Bridge Programme for Master Studies in Engineering. This partnership will further strengthen our program and university portfolio and provide our learners with global opportunities across the field of Technology. The bridge program will not only aim to upskill learners in various Technology disciplines but also aid them through with working visa and career support, on completion to ensure that our learners can pursue a career in France.

Cyril Marteaux, Director, Academic Affairs & International Relations, ESIGELEC added, “ESIGELEC becomes the first French HEI to partner with upGrad! We are elated! Our program will give science graduates openings that hitherto, were reserved for engineering graduates only.

Through ESIGELEC’s state-of-the-art lab facilities, students will discover France’s excellence in technology and our international teaching faculty will expose them to different pedagogical approaches, making them ready to face the demands of multi-cultural work environments.

We look forward to meeting the first cohort of the Graduate Bridge Program in March, this year. An exhilarating experience in the cultural capital of the world awaits them, not to mention all that Europe had to offer!”

H.E. Mr Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India, said: “Student exchanges are a cornerstone of the Indo-French friendship. I am glad that more and more Indian students are choosing France for their study abroad, especially following the 2018 agreement on Mutual Recognition of Academic Qualifications and France’s efforts to expand partnerships between higher education institutions in our two countries. France is home to world-class engineering colleges and this partnership between UpGrad & ESIGELEC is one more step towards achieving our goal of welcoming 20 000 Indian students in France by 2025.”

India has 10426 institutes and 548 new institutions started in the year 2018-19. The decision draws upon the experience of the admission season of 2019-20, which saw every other seat in this technical stream, remain vacant. Between 2015 and 2019, around 518 engineering colleges were shut down.

As per the council’s committee headed by IIT-Hyderabad chairman, BVR Mohan Reddy proposed that the ban will be reviewed after two years to a new report. “In view of a large number of vacant seats in various programmes during the last few years and the likely future demand, the council shall not grant approval to new technical institutions at the diploma/ undergraduate/postgraduate level in engineering and technology,” as per new AICTE handbook for the upcoming academic year.
