Any student who wishes to improve his or her score will have the option to appear for exams later. Students having compartment or back in any of the previous semesters will have to clear that exam whenever it will be held in the future, according to the official notice.

The Board of Technical Education (BTE), Delhi has cancelled all the exams for the diploma courses because of the Coronavirus pandemic. As per an official notice released by the university, students of all semesters will be promoted on the basis of internal assessment and past year performance.

A total of 50 per cent weightage will be given to the internal assessment of students in the present session and result 50 per cent to the scores obtained in last year’s final exams, mentions the official notice. Any student who wishes to improve his or her score will have the option to appear for exams. The dates of these exams are not announced as of now.

Students who have a compartment in any of previous semesters and have completed their course duration will be given an extension of one year to qualify their diploma for all semesters, declares the notice while adding “this issues with the prior approval of the competent authority.”

Delhi had earlier also asked the universities in the state to not hold final year exams or semester exams. But, UGC lately said in the Supreme Court that the state governments do not have the authority to do so. The final year exams for degree courses are scheduled to be conducted in the month of September.

With a lot of anticipation circulating the Delhi University admission, the university has decided not to have a single cutoff list for the BA programme. The decision was made as part of the meeting held on Thursday by the University’s standing committee of the Academic Council. The university plans to introduce different cutoffs for the different combination subjects to limit the students from shifting from weaker disciplines.

As per the DU admission procedure followed, the admissions were taken to a general BA programme, candidates were then able to choose the combinations offered by the respective colleges. This year, however, the university has decided to introduce separate cutoffs for individual courses such as political science and Economic.

Delhi University Academic Council Standing Committee Member Rasal Singh has also pointed out that the students will have a chance to change to a different programme. He explains that if a student wishes to change from one subject to another, he/she will have to cancel the admission in the course selected earlier and meet the individual cutoff set for the course they wish to change into.

Delhi University is set to start the admission process for the academic year 2019-20 by May 27, 2019. With the NTA roped in to conduct the admission test for the different programmes a clear picture about the admission process will be available only after the admission notification is released by the university.

Till last few years, when BA English (Hons) or BSc (Hons) Electronics used to get highest cut-offs. But, 2018 witnessed highest cut-offs for the BA programme. The highest cut-off was registered at Lady Shri Ram College which registered 98.75% for the course. It is an increase of 3.25% from last year. Earlier, the career choices of students vacillated just from science to commerce and no student prepared hard to get into an eminent institution in the arena of humanities. Most of them opted for courses that led them to economically secure careers. But, trends are changing these days and even engineers after dedicating years to their daunting education are passionate about pursuing a degree in humanities.

What is humanities stream all about? It envelops the study of diverse subjects that fall under arts, languages, history, and research techniques. Thus, a humanities degree will include subjects such as history, economics, sociology, literature, and performing arts. The popularity of these subjects has gained so much momentum that top engineering institutes such as IITs are adding fine arts and humanities in their curriculum along with other engineering subjects. The aim behind this is to develop them into holistic individuals. IIT-Madras is now offering a five-year integrated MA programme in English and Economics, while IIT Kharagpur has courses for law too. Also, IIT-BHU is redesigning most of its courses to teach humanistic studies.

Most of the leaders at Silicon Valley have specialized in liberal arts and humanities. LinkedIn’s founder Reid Hoffman has masters in philosophy; Slack’s founder Stewart Butterfield has a major in English; and Airbnb’s founder, Brain Chesky has a major in fine arts. Subjects in humanities help us to understand other languages, histories, and culture and individuals can make moral, spiritual, and intellectual sense of the world. In a survey conducted by CareerCo among 36,000 students in nine cities, 74% of students were interested in pursuing humanities.

What has led to the sudden popularity of this course? Kanika S Ahuja, Associate Professor of Psychology, LSR explains, “It has a lot to do with students’ piquing interest in Civil Services. Two subjects, history and political science which are in the Mains, are both covered by the BA programme.” Graduates and post-graduates in humanities can opt for careers in civil services, journalism, banking related sectors, international organisations, NGOs, consultancy firms etc. Most of the humanities programme involves studying language at the deeper level; exposure to creative writing can help in developing journalistic capabilities in a student. Hence, humanities stream offers a student a lot to explore.

Delhi University this year has received more than 3.5 lakh applications for undergraduate courses across various disciplines till last day of registration. The portal for admission opened on May 15, 2018 for all aspiring students those who wish to become a part of prestigious colleges at this university. DU has till now confirmed the release of at least five cut-off lists. The first list is expected to come out on June 19, 2018.

Increase in Number of Applicants

While approximately 3,85,749 applicants have registered on the official portal of Delhi University, 2,70,515 applicants have already made their admission payment. The total number of male candidates to apply this year were 1, 80,092 and total female candidates to apply reached up to 15,197. Students to apply in the ‘other’ category were 101. These statistics have increased since last year when just 3,30,567 applicants had registered and just 2,20,000 had made payments.

Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, Deputy Dean, student welfare, Delhi University added to this, “The reason we have received more registrations this year could be because we have a unified form for merit-based and entrance-based undergraduate programmes. Last year, around 30,000 students had applied separately for the entrance-based courses. So we may cross the number of applications we received last year.’ Postgraduate courses saw a registration of 1, 66,407 students on DU portal. 80,328 out of this total number were males and 80,328 were females. Candidates to register in the ‘others’ category were 67.

Entrance Test Based Programmes

Merit based courses in the university are based on the cut-off list and entrance based courses require candidates to appear for an online entrance test. UG courses based on entrance tests are Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), Bachelor of Business Administration (financial investment analysis), BA Business Economics and Bachelor of Science in Physical Education Health Education & Sports, BA (H) Multimedia and Mass Communication, B.Tech (Information Technology and Mathematical Innovations), BA (H) Music, Bachelor of Elementary Education.

Changed Format of Forms

Format of application forms have been changed to reduce duplicity like last year. Only one form was required to be filled last year that resulted in duplicity but now students are required to fill multiple forms. “Last year too, students may have found loopholes by varying their roll number slightly to work around the system. So the impact of duplicate forms would be less than 5 per cent, if at all,” said an official on the condition of anonymity. The detailed information about the admission process will be available under ‘Bulletin of Information’ on the university’s official website, the varsity had earlier declared in a statement.

Date sheet for SOL students of Delhi University has been released, irrespective of any information on syllabi as the university has not even released their study material so far.

The date sheet states that the examinations will be conducted in May. However, students were waiting for notifications regarding the lecturers. Many students gathered at the office of executive director (SOL), H C Pokhriyal on Monday seeking solution to the problem.

Harish Gautam, second-year BA (prog) SOL student opined, “The move will inevitably lead to mass failure and then mass drop out of students. This amounts to a blatant discrimination against those students who already are facing marginalisation in terms of educational opportunities.” He further said, “The executive director met us and promised to take corrective measures immediately. However, the damage has been already been done and it would affect the results of students badly.” He added, “The authorities had promised to take all remedial measures then as well but nothing has happened so far.”
