BHU is about to implement an in house program where PhD scholars from the university will get a chance to teach students while they wait for their viva-voce to be conducted. Under the ‘Teach for BHU’ initiative, students according to the university will gain some hands on experience. “This is being done with the intention that students make the best use of the time they have after they submit their thesis till they get the degree,” the assistant PRO of BHU Chander Shekhar Gwari stated.

Students fulfilling a set of criteria will be selected for the programme. A few of the criteria include their academic record and overall performance, stated BHU’s assistant PRO Chandra Shekhar Gwari. Students who qualify the criteria and are selected for the program will be rewarded 40,000 rupees per month along with rent allowance.

Additional factors like money and experience have been able to entice students for this program. The official notice of the university states “Engaging PhD students in teaching will help them acquire and demonstrate skills in leadership, people management and project management, which may otherwise be difficult to obtain. Students who have submitted or are expected to submit a thesis (within 6 years of the date of admission, not the registration date) will be eligible to apply for the scheme.” The university went on to state “Those selected for the fellowship will be involved in teaching (independent course/involvement in a laboratory classroom, etc) in the University, its associated colleges and schools including nearby underprivileged schools.” The university came up with the idea of students teaching during the interim period in the interest of the university and the society as well, the university stated.
