The prestigious event, organized by the European Academy of Design, is being held in India for the first time

Sonipat-based World University of Design, India’s first and only university dedicated to education in creative domains such as Fashion, Design, Arts and Architecture, is hosting the 15th International Conference on Doctoral Education in Design. The event, to be held on October 18, 2023, is being held in partnership with the Punjab-based RIMT University.

The prestigious biennial conference is organised by the European Academy of Design (EAD) to reflect on what is needed to fuel the future of design education. The 2023 conference will be delivered over five one-day events in five cities in the world including Sonipat, Bilbao (Spain), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Espoo (Finland) and Glasgow (the UK).The conference, being held for the first time in India, explores doctoral design research and education and its role in defining agendas for the next 25 years.

Each of the five country hubs is focusing on different themes: Beyond Human-Centred Design Research (Sonipat); The Discipline of DesignTransdisciplinary Practices (Bilbao); Living in the Pluriverse (São Paulo); Exploring the Social Impact of Design Research (Espoo); and Extreme Making (Glasgow).

The in-person event at World University of Design’s SonipatCampus will have keynote addresses and presentation by more than 25 researchers. Also, in attendance will be 150 delegates and invitees from major universities of design, industry, stakeholders, and doctoral students. For design academics and researchers, this will be an important networking event.

Two keynote speakers at the Conference are from IIT Delhi, including Jay Dhariwal who will speak on “How can we Change the World through Design Research?” and Sudipto Mukherjee whose talk is titled“Towards Developing the Mind’s Eye.” The third keynote speaker, the noted designer Mukul Goyal who has created the eponymous label comprising of objects of home decor, would share his thoughts on “Craft in Your Hands: The Interwoven Relationships between Tradition, Materials and Processes for Contemporary Design.”

Said Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Gupta, Vice Chancellor, World University of Design, Sonipat: “We are delighted and honored to play hosts to this prestigious global conference by the European Academy of Designwhich is being held for the first timein India. The event is positioned to address the future requirements of design education. Its tagline ‘What got us here, won’t get us there,’highlights the fact that design education is going to need a massive rethink and overhaul because the world is changing ever so rapidly. For India, this is even more relevant as doctoral education in design is almost non-existent in the country. While the hosting of this Conference in India shows that the country has come up the ladder of design education to a certain extent, the fact of the matter is that we need even higher levels of education in design if the creative domains are truly to be a catalyst in the development of Indian economy.”

Registration for delegates is open. With a single registration, the delegates would be able to attend the in-person conference at WUD Sonipat as well as the online conferences in 4 other cities.

The Indian Institute of Technology (or IIT Indore) has introduced a new undergraduate course in Space Science and Engineering. This BTech (Bachelor of Technology) course will allow the students to delve deeper into the global need for environmental awareness, such as studying and predicting climate change, agriculture, environment, ecology, astronomy, communication, navigation, and others.

This course might just be the perfect fit for students nurturing a curiosity for space and astronomy. Students will get a chance to study and gain proper exposure to recent technological advancements in payloads, small satellites and detector design. Other aspects of this course would be data analytics, imaging, and high-end numerical simulations. They will also be dealing with other applications that are targeted towards earth observations, sustainable developments, ecology, climate change, defence, communication, navigation, and the like.
Students would also get a chance to specialise in any of the following fields – space instrumentation – detectors and payloads, imaging and data analytics, remote sensing and atmospheric engineering, astronomy and astrophysics. Based on their desired specialization, they will receive specially curated elective courses and a semester-long research project.
After the curriculum discussed above, comes the question of course structure, seat capacity and eligibility criteria. IIT Indore currently offers 20 seats for BTech in Space Science and Engineering, with eight semesters in its four-year duration. It is a full-time undergraduate course; each semester, students will have 6-7 subjects alongside other electives. Admissions will be based on JEE Advanced scores, and any student who has qualified the class 12 or equivalent examination from any recognised central or state board can apply.
By completing this course, students can contribute to the sector of research and development in space technology with further higher studies. Candidates will get equal opportunities in government and private sector jobs providing space tech development opportunities.

Universities and Higher Education Institutions in India will now be allowed to add 25 percent supernumerary seats for foreign students in their undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes as per UGC chairman Jagadesh Kumar’s input to PTI.

There will be no entrance tests for these admissions; the decision was taken at a meeting of the University Grants Commission (UGC) held last week to discuss “internationalisation of UG and PG programmes in India.”

“Indian HEIs may admit international students based on the equivalence of entry qualification held by them. The equivalence is to be determined by UGC or any other body recognised by UGC for such purpose or the concerned regulatory bodies of the country. HEIs may adopt a transparent admission process for admitting the international students,” Kumar told PTI.

“HEIs may create up to 25 per cent supernumerary seats for international students, over and above of their total sanctioned enrolment for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes,” added him.
